Meet Dr Maurizio Pacilli
Dr Pacilli is a triple-qualified (Italy, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand) academic surgeon working as a specialist paediatric surgeon at Monash Children’s Hospital and Senior Lecturer at Monash University; he has been working in the field of paediatric surgery for more than 20 years.
Dr Pacilli has a strong passion for clinical research, focussed on minimally invasive surgery and clinical trials; he has been awarded prizes for his research from the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons, the Canadian Association of Paediatric Surgeons and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He sits on the scientific committees of three international societies.
What is paediatric surgery?
Paediatric surgery is the surgical specialty where doctors have focused their training to operate on babies, children and adolescents up to 16 years of age, and for some conditions up to 18 years of age. Children are not just small adults and they might not be able to explain what is bothering them. They can be scared during a medical examination; paediatric surgeons know how to examine and treat children in a way that makes them feel relaxed, safe, and at ease.
